She entered service in 1965 alongside her two sister ships, the MV American Legion and the MV The Gov. Herbert H. Lehman. While American Legion was retired in 2006 as the newer Molinari-class ferries entered service, and The Gov. Herbert H. Lehman was decommissioned the following year,[1] John F. Kennedy has remained in service as a favorite of both passengers and ferry operators, mainly running "as needed" on weekday schedules (when four of the six boats are needed for service). Captains consider her to be the most reliable vessel in the fleet,[5] and riders prefer her abundant open-air deck space.[6] Die Staten Island Ferry ist eine Fährverbindung, die im Hafen von New York City zwischen Manhattan und Staten Island durch das Department of Transportation betrieben wird.

John F. Kennedy is currently planned to be retired in 2020, along with the two Barberi-class ferries from 1981-82. These three vessels will be replaced by a new trio of ferries, collectively known as the Ollis-class.[7] The design of this new class will be heavily influenced by John F. Kennedy, featuring her distinctive outdoor promenades and extended foredecks.[6] The crash was at first said by New York City to be an Act of God, with attorneys arguing that the Department of Transportation should not be held responsible for the crash, an argument that disturbed many survivors and New York City residents.[11] City attorneys, citing a 19th-century maritime law, would later argue that the total amount of damages sought against the city should not exceed the $14.4 million value of the ferryboat. On February 26, 2007, U.S. District Judge Edward Korman rejected this argument and held that the city could not cap damages, writing: "The city's failure to provide a second pilot or otherwise adopt a reasonable practice that addresses the issue of pilot incapacitation was plainly a substantial factor in causing the disaster."[12] Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal, New York, New York. 937 likes · 13 talking about this · 59,059 were here.
