Metacritic TV Episode Reviews, The Changeling, The Enterprise encounters an ancient Earth probe bent on the sterilization of all life... The Borg were discovered to be a group without individuality, where every member is a part of a collective consciousness in an attempt to achieve perfection. They assimilate any species they come into contact with for either biological aspects (for example, Talaxians would be assimilated for their dense physical structure, useful for producing strong, resilient drones) or technological aspects (a species which has developed advanced engines or weaponry would be a sufficiently desirable target for assimilation) all in an attempt to further improve the overall perfection of the Borg as a whole. Whilst they were capable shapeshifters, a Changeling was required revert to its liquid state every sixteen hours to regenerate. (DS9 episode: "The Search") At such a time, they had to spend least a single hour a day to revert back to its gelatinous form whereupon they rested and rejuvenated. They were able to resist this for a limited amount of time but they would eventually forcibly revert against their will and be unable to take a shape until they had rested. Some Changelings were capable of withstanding this reversion longer than others with some being noted as being able to last a week before changing back to their gelatinous state. However, there is at least one section of the ship that is sealed and filled with air for land-based races. This room also has a window so the visitors can communicate with the Aquatic crew. Aquatic vessels can emit a field that disrupts targeting scanners. This can also be applied to protect other ships. However, their ships are very slow and cannot travel much faster than Warp 2. Aquatic ships also carry extremely powerful weapons and are more than a match for Insectoid and Reptilian ships. Aquatic warships are huge and one of them was depicted carrying the Enterprise NX-01 to Earth inside a chamber within the vessel after the Xindi weapon was destroyed. The Enterprise encounters a powerful energy force that has apparently killed all human life in a solar system with over one billion inhabitants. They identify the culprit as a small space probe that had its origins on Earth. Called Nomad, it merged with another and, as a result, took on a new mission to destroy all biological beings as being imperfect. It believes Captain Kirk to be its creator and, as such, has spared the Enterprise and its crew, at least temporarily. Written by garykmcd There are two contrasting concepts for Trill. One is that the symbiont is essentially an alien person;[13][14] however, the joined Trill still mixes the original person with the memories and some of the personality of the symbiont.[14] Only a small percentage of Trill use symbionts.[14] For joined Trill, a symbiont's memories and to some extent personality are a synthesis with the existing Trill's personality.[14] Joined Trill have been studied in the philosophies of Star Trek, in particular whether a person is essentially the sum of their memories (the philosopher Locke's "memory theory").[15] This concept was explored in the Star Trek:Deep Space Nine television episode "Dax".[15] (see Personal identity § Locke's conception) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor René Auberjonois dies at 79. Furthermore, phaser's that were set on heavy stun were able to force a Changeling to revert to its natural form, although if they were able to shift their surfaces, with enough warning to a mirror-like finish, they could become immune to phaser fire. After the war, the Xindi scattered throughout the Expanse into several colonies. As a whole, they have a passionate desire to establish a new homeworld and unify all Xindi, but differ greatly on how to accomplish this and on who should hold the ultimate reins of power. The Xindi then spent the early part of 2153 deciding how to confront the threat of humanity and planned a biological weapon based on the human genetic profile. This was ultimately rejected by the Xindi Council (the Reptilians went along with the bio weapon but were eventually foiled) and so they worked on a weapon to destroy Earth. The majority of the Changelings that made up the Great Link nearly faced extinction when they were infected with a morphogenic virus by a secret intelligence wing within the United Federation of Planets which was called Section 31. They intended to wipe out the Founders and end the threat posed by the Dominion by committing genocide and accomplished this by infecting Deep Space 9 security chief Odo with the virus in order for him to serve as a carrier for the disease. However, he was eventually cured by the efforts of Doctor Julian Bashir and Odo eventually cured the Female Changeling thus saving the race from extinction as well as ending the Dominion War. (DS9 episodes: "Extreme Measures", "What You Leave Behind") The Xindi /ˈzɪndi/ is the collective term for six fictional races in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise. The entire third season, broadcast in 2003 to 2004, centered on this group of previously unknown aliens. They are native to the planet Xindus in a region of space known as the Delphic Expanse. They consist of five species resembling familiar Earth animals (a rarity for alien races in Star Trek) and a sixth resembling humans. At first they appeared as violent enemies wanting no interaction with humanity, but common ground gradually emerged as the crew of the Enterprise discovered that the Xindi were being manipulated into this enmity by the Sphere Builders. Some Xindi became important recurring characters as the 24-episode story arc unfolded. The morphogenic matrix of a Changeling was not perfect and it was capable of suffering from instabilities that could threaten their lives. The Changeling is a season two episode of the original science fiction television series Star Trek, first broadcast on September 29, 1967 and repeated May 17, 1968. It is episode #32, production #37 and was written by John. Could Martia from Star Trek VI have been a changeling? Discussion in 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' started by parrot999, Jul 1, 2015. parrot999 Cadet Newbie. Joined: May 3, 2011. So, I recently rewatched Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and think it is a really good, and criminally underrated film, which thematically and structurewise.

Personally, I feel that Star Trek: The Motion Picture, while erected from familiar pieces (namely, the ingredients of The Changeling) is nonetheless one of the most beautiful and rewarding science fiction films of the late 1970s.It is also a very fulfilling Star Trek movie because the main characters, particularly Spock, grow in life-altering, humanity-affirming ways Changelings were keen observers of solid behavior. This was not only due to their natural curiosity but also due to their need to protect themselves for they had to understand those they had to enforce order on or otherwise lose control over them. By deeply understanding a species and have intimate knowledge of them, a Changeling was capable of assuming a false identity amongst them with ease. Their time amongst these species does not color their views for deep down they understand that all solids are driven by fear and misunderstanding thus eventually leading them to turn on the Changelings if their existence were truly known. Thus, ironically, by attempting to defend themselves from persecution, the Changelings had become the very beings that Solids had feared.

The Changelings are extremely non-conventional lifeforms. Their natural state is that of a golden liquid, but they are able to take virtually any form they wish, including solids, liquids, gases and even plasma or fire. They must return to their liquid state every 16 hours, although it is likely that this is valid only for still inexperienced Changelings, like Odo. The Enterprise encounters a probe named Nomad Air Date: Sep 29, 196 We know that DS9 Changelings. Odo's species, reproduce because Odo himself was found as a baby and he was told by the founder that they had sent him and other babies out into space, but I don't recall any mention of how babies are made

With little time left, Kirk comes to recognize Nomad's refabricated mission and takes a gamble to confront it again before it returns to Earth to "sterilize" the planet's population. Through a questioning to Nomad on its prime directive in engineering, Kirk confirms his suspicions that it must execute it with no exceptions, and then reveals that he indeed is not Nomad's creator. He explains that Nomad had mistaken himself for Roykirk who is long dead, the two men's names being similar, and as such Nomad has committed an error; furthermore, it has compounded that error with two more, specifically failing to realize its mistake and failing to immediately execute its prime directive as a result. This causes Nomad to lock up in an irreversible logic loop, its stubborn belief that it is perfect conflicting with the realization that it is in error. Capitalizing on the weakened Nomad, Spock and Kirk manage to get it to the transporter room with anti-gravs and have Scott beam it out into space just as it executes its prime function on itself. The explosion is detected near the Enterprise and Nomad is no more. They are thought to be extinct since the Reptilians and Insectoids planted explosives that destroyed the Xindi homeworld after the Hundred-Year War. The Avians, having primitive technology, could not leave the planet and were wiped out. Because of this, the Reptilians say that their lair, in which the Xindi Council now convenes, has a "stench of failure." This group of Ba'ku followed a simple way of life and disdained the use of technology. (As shown in the film Star Trek: Insurrection, however, the Ba'ku still possessed some form of technology and the ability to use it in emergencies, since they had attempted to repair the damaged Data.) At first the Ba'ku were unaware of the metaphasic radiation in the planet's rings, which caused their aging process to significantly decelerate, although it was later discovered and cherished.

Thus they sent a Hundred infant members of their kind into the galaxy in order to learn more about it by being raised by Solids. However, they were also implanted with a desire to return home and share their experiences with the Great Link. Most of these foundlings often found their way back home where they joined their society willingly; abandoning their past lives along with the friends in order to share in the communal life of the Great Link. These young Changeling were sometimes victims of persecution amongst the races they ended up living with and their experiences often reinforced the Great Link desire to rule the Solids rather than be allowed to be hurt by them. Changelings rarely argued with one another and readily conceded their views to another's greater wisdom or insight. If there was ever any doubt than they simply Linked with one another and through the merger their thoughts and forms became one. In this state, it was easily determined he was fit to lead in a given situation. The Xindi were also informed by the Guardians, at least as early as 2152, that they would be victims of a genocidal attack from humans in the 26th century. Following their guidance, the Xindi launched a pre-emptive test strike on Earth as a precursor to a devastating second attack. In Daniels' timeline, Xindi crewmen serve in the Federation in the 26th century, in a battle with humans and Xindi against the Sphere Builders. With the help of Captain Archer's evidence of the future cooperation, the Xindi Council began to split over the issue of whether the Guardians were the real enemy or not. The split widened when Reptilian Council Member Dolim killed Primate Council Member Degra. While Kirk and Spock are gone, Nomad leaves the confined area and decides to improve the efficiency of engineering, taking the Enterprise eventually to warp 10 in the process. Kirk arrives and forces it to stop. Unfortunately, the mind meld and an unintentional admittance from Kirk confirms to Nomad that its creator is an imperfect biological entity, and with that knowledge, it leaves on Kirk's order to contemplate the new data with two security officers. They deduce it will not obey for long and eventually sterilize Earth. The entire crew is hurled around, and when things stabilize, Kirk orders Uhura to inform Starfleet of the apparent disappearance and the attack. Spock reports that the shields will stand only three more such impacts, as they have been reduced by 20%. The Enterprise's shields continue to be battered by repeated attacks. Finally, after the shields are completely gone and a photon torpedo in response has been completely absorbed, Kirk orders Uhura to hail the very small object Spock has identified as the source of attack. The object stops its assault and tries to respond to the hail with an old-style binary code. The crew has some difficulty translating, but eventually succeeds. The object identifies itself as Nomad, and its mission as "non-hostile."

They also prominently feature in Nemesis.[citation needed] The race embarked on a period of exploration of the galaxy due to their natural curiosity. However, they found themselves hunted and killed by distrustful solids who feared their shapeshifting abilities. Thus, the population of Changelings came together on an unnamed planet in the Gamma Quadrant and called themselves the Founders. This group thus sought a chance to protect themselves by dominating the solids that would wish them harm. In order to accomplish this, they formed a mighty empire called the Dominion which they ruled as gods. (DS9 episode: "The Search") One Changeling was noted to have been wounded on an unknown world whilst being chased by an angry mob of solids. This Changeling was given shelter and cared for by a family of small primates and in gratitude the Changeling promised the creatures that they would be part of a mighty empire in the stars. Those primates were genetically engineered to become the Vorta who became important administrators of this empire. (DS9 episode: "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River") Similarly, the Jem'Hadar were genetically engineered to serve as the enforcers and soldiers of the Founders' will. 3. A cat-like race introduced in Star Trek: The Animated Series. This episode was an adaptation of a Larry Niven "Known Space" short story ("The Soft Weapon")
  4. Changeling or shapeshifter were terms used for the few species that could assume different forms. The Clawdites of Zolan were shapeshifters. Thanks to those abilities, changelings made almost undetectable impostors, which posed security risks. Notably, the Clawdite bounty hunter Cato Parasitti helped Cad Bane infiltrate the Jedi Temple on Coruscant by impersonating Chief Librarian Jocasta Nu.
  5. Changelings often had an intense desire to merge together and join the Great Link; typically this was at least once a week if not more frequently. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens) In order to accomplish this, they simply reverted to their liquid based form and merged together whereupon a link was established as their forms blended together. (DS9 episode: "The Search, Part II") Only foundlings were usually able to resist this urge which was due to the fact that they had been raised without knowing of the Link and thus retained some degree of individuality. This was often an alien concept to the other members of the Great Link. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens) As such, they often thought of a single member of their race as a drop in a larger ocean and thus saw little sense in individual identity. (DS9 episode: "The Search, Part II")
  6. The Thasians are a psionically powerful, non-corporeal species, native to the planet Thasus. Until the 23rd century, the Federation had never encountered the Thasians and thus believed them to be a myth. They appeared in "Charlie X" on the Original Series.

One famous theory explaining both the Changeling's mass alteration abilities and how they obtain energy is that they are able to exist in subspace, as well as in normal space, regularly importing and exporting mass and energy between the two[1] Changelings do not eat or drink, and need no air or any other substance to live. They are perfectly able to survive in space vacuum for unlimited periods of time. Since they need no sunlight either (their homeworld has no sun), it is a complete mystery how they get the energy they need for living.

Kzinti society is a male dominated race of warriors (they prefer to use the term "Heroes") led by the Patriarch. Kzinti Heros have much in common with Klingon warriors, in that they highly value courage, fighting prowess, and consider personal honor of highest priority. The one racial "flaw" that Kzinti have is overconfidence, which manifests itself in a tendency to attack before they are truly ready. This is because they believe that combat, with the removal of all challenge and risk (i.e. certain success), lessens the honor gained in battle. Originally, Nomad was built by Jackson Roykirk for a deep-space extraterrestrial contact mission early in the 21st century, in the year 2002, but was lost in a meteor shower, where it was presumed destroyed. The Changeling is a strange episode. On the one hand, it anticipates what many years later would be the plot of the first film in the Star Trek saga, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), directed by Robert Wise.On the other hand, it recycles a couple of ideas already used in the first season: in The Return of the Archons, Kirk induced the Landru computer to self-destruct by highlighting a. Changelings (aka Founders ) are a race of gelatinous non-humanoid species native to the Gamma Quadrant world known only as Founders Planet, in the Omarion Nebula. Little is known about their origins other than that they had once been an exploratory race which had been treated with mistrust for so long that they changed their priorities to conquest. Thus they formed the Dominion Still, that is not to say the producers weren't thrifty. Props were reused, like the Nomad robot from The Changeling, which returned in later episodes, recycled as both another robot (M4) and a Romulan cloaking device. A Desilu Productions work, Star Trek also made frequent use of the company's Forty Acres backlot. The idyllic downtown on the. Changelings are a species of shape-shifting lifeforms from the Gamma Quadrant. The Xindi Council is the joint governmental body of the Xindi races, as seen Season three of Star Trek: Enterprise. The Council was formed after the destruction of the Xindi homeworld Xindus in the 2030s. It consists of two representatives of each of the Xindi species, and was formed to find a new homeworld for all the Xindi races. However, although they found a few suitable planets, they could never agree on a final choice. The Council chamber is located on a planet 15.6 light-years from Azati Prime. The land-based races sit at a large round table in the center of the room, while the Aquatics look on from a large tank adjoining the chamber by a window. The chamber has built-in equipment for holographics and a viewscreen for telemetry. The chamber itself was actually a stronghold built by the Xindi-Avians before they were wiped out. The entire system they were assigned to go to has been wiped out of all organic life forms, leading the crew to wonder just what the hell is going on. The answer comes in the form of a tiny pod firing massive amounts of photon fire at.

This event proves disconcerting to Kirk, who then orders Nomad to be guarded and analyzed by Spock. After the analysis and a background check on Nomad in the ship's data banks, Spock gets enough details through a mind meld with the probe to fill in the blanks. After the meteor collision, Nomad was disoriented and wandered through space until coming into contact with Tan Ru, an alien probe whose mission was to collect and sterilize soil samples, presumably as a prelude to colonization. The two melded into this new Nomad, combining their technology and missions into one extremely powerful probe bent on sterilizing any imperfect lifeforms it encountered, using its own perceptions of perfection (i.e. itself) as a measuring stick. As such, it destroyed all life in the Malurian star system but because its original programming was damaged and corrupted in the merger, it erroneously equates Kirk with its creator, not realizing that the two are different people and its creator has been, in fact, dead for centuries. In 2376, a Changeling was left stranded on a world after her vessel crashed onto the unnamed planet. When the USS Defiant led by Captain Elias Vaughn came to rescue her they noticed that an assimilated Borg vessel was on the planet as well. The drone attempted to assimilate the Founder but she simply compressed herself and the nanoprobes whereupon she ejected a ball of nanoprobes with no ill effects to herself. Consumed with guilt over sending the Hundred away, the Changelings dispersed and decided to live in isolation, even from their own kind. Once members of the neo-luddite race the Ba'ku, the Son'a were exiled from their home planet by their fellows for trying to overthrow the leadership and embracing more advanced technology. Now separated from the rejuvenating properties of the Ba'ku planet, they attempt to avoid death through medical procedures. The Son'a use technology, including weaponry, banned within the Federation. However, in 2375 the Federation allied with the Son'a to take advantage of their technology to gather rejuvenating 'metaphasic particles' emanating from the rings of the Ba'ku planet, which is in Federation space. After the operation, which involved the forced relocation or genocide of the Ba'ku, was called into question and stopped by the crew of the Enterprise, a number of the Son'a reintegrated into the Ba'ku population. Others later joined the Dominion. The Son'a have subjugated two peoples as their slaves: the Ellora and the Tarlac.[10] Defeated Changeling is a mission item received when you defeat a Founder-Changeling in combat.
