During his "Brady Bunch" heyday, Reed picked up Bill Eliel at a gay bar called The Club House, Eliel recalled, "I'd seen him at the bar before and at that point he was till very popular as the father on "The Brady Bunch." He asked me if I wanted to go home with him and we went to his house in South Pasadena. We had sex but as soon as the sex was finished he wanted me to go and wanted to forget about me.

Competition was fierce to play parents Mike, an architect, and Carol, a stay-at-home mom with creative pursuits. One actress vying for the matriarch role sent Schwartz nude photos. Another, when Schwartz went to shake her hand, instead grabbed his crotch.“I don’t feel like anyone thinks it’s a great show. This is not the sitcom version of ‘Breaking Bad,’ ” author Kimberly Potts told The Post. “It’s more that it’s a sweet show. Now so many generations have watched it, it’s a good memory and makes them feel good.”

Robert Reed died on May 12, 1992, Pasadena, California, at just 59 years old, according to the NY Times. He was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Illinois, as he was originally from Illinois. The Washington Post reported that Reed’s daughter Karen Baldwin said he had been diagnosed with intestinal cancer six months prior to his death, but he also suffered from HIV, according to The NY Times. Though he was born in Chicago suburb of Illinois, he enjoyed his early years in Texas and eventually attended Woodrow-Wilson Grade School. Shortly after that, his family shited to Oklahoma. As his father was involved in turkey and cattle farming, Robert also went to join 4-H agricultural club.Reed, who fancied himself a Shakespearean actor, took the part simply for the money and quickly became a distraction. The unhappy actor would frequently spend his lunch breaks getting sloshed and when he returned to the set drunk, Schwartz would have to end filming for the day. Luckily, the child actors were usually done at that point and avoided witnessing most of his bad behavior and angry outbursts.

The early 1990’s may seem like eons ago in terms of gay rights but Reed was as pro-LGBT rights that the times would allow. He helped many of the children who he played a father to on Brady Bunch form their progressive LGBT views."And later it was found out the book it was based on was a hoax; there was NO Kunta Kinte. It was all made up."
